Multilingual
Education
Patang’s Multilingual Education (MLE) programme makes education meaningful and inclusive by starting in the language children speak at home. It creates spaces where teachers, parents, and education officials can meet as equal partners and supports them in developing teaching-learning materials that connect with children’s daily lives. The programme also documents and shares its practices so that other organisations and schools can benefit from these locally rooted approaches.
Through our work in education, Patang has recognized the vital importance of mother tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) in ensuring every child's right to a quality education. Allowing students to read and write in their native language enhances their understanding of the relationship between spoken and written words. This fundamental understanding significantly improves their ability to acquire reading and writing skills in other languages, even if the script differs from their mother tongue.
Patang has devised a Mother Tongue (MT) based MLE framework and developed resources in the Sambalpuri language for Grades I to III. We are actively implementing this approach in 10 learning centers in Bargarh to enhance children's learning outcomes. Additionally, we provide training to
government school teachers on MLE in Bargarh and Sambalpur, assisting them in creating Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs). You can find our resources on our website, and for more information, please don't hesitate to reach out to Radhakanta at radhakanta@patangindia.org, our
